Brock @ Purdue University
My name is Brock and I am a Computer & Information Technology masters student at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. My undergrad research was in network engineering and I am currently studying information security. Being passionate about security has led me to several different projects this semester! Some of these include the hardening of security measures in an IoT agriculture monitoring system, analysis of network traffic from different IoT technologies such as Z-Wave, ZigBee, Lora/LoraWan, and narrow band. I will also be performing a security assessment of both a local hotel and a sporting event venue to determine where they are excelling and what areas they need to dedicate further effort to. Outside of the university, I am taking on projects including starting our local libraries first-ever teen hacking camp and research into biohacking technologies such as RFID and NFC implants.
Through the course of researching all these different technologies, I was lead to Rysc Corp and all the amazing tools that have been created! Without a doubt, the Proxmark 3, HackRF One, and MagSpoof would be essential tools to furthering my research. Through the Proxmark 3, I can begin to take a look at some of the NFC systems that are in use along with RFID/NFC implants. The HackRF One will be necessary to begin looking at some of these IoT networks that are outside the 802.11 standard. I would like to delve into seeing if it's possible to capture some of this IoT network traffic and either perform analysis on it or determine what weaknesses are present. As part of the hotel and sporting event venue security assessments, I would love to take a look at the security of the card readers and believe the MagSpoof would be a great tool to use to do this.
