Tony @ Ohio University
Hi, my name is Tony. I’m a master’s student in electrical engineering at Ohio University. I’ve been able to combine my love of aviation and electrical engineering to study avionics, especially in the area of navigation systems. This is a practical topic to me as I am also a private pilot who uses electronic systems when I fly. My other hobby is amateur radio, which has supplemented my engineering education significantly.
Through my experience in these areas, I’ve become personally interested in radio navigation systems like VOR and ILS. As a personal project, I’d like to create my own portable VOR receiver, but one of the issues I’m having is obtaining test equipment that will allow me to generate a signal to test as these systems operate at VHF. This is why it would be handy to get a HackRF One. I plan to implement the transmitter in software (of course never allowed to radiate) and use it throughout the development of my own hardware-based solution. In the end, I hope to bring my receiver up for a final flight test and use it to navigate.
